Youth Education

In Our Hands

The In Our Hands project involves the education of younger generations on the importance of educating yourself on marine conservation issues. The project aims to reach out to and inspire young people to become active in environmental conservation. The project sets out to encourage the importance of safeguarding the natural environment in the hope for a more sustainable future. The 2013 road trip around Australia will be conducted to to assist in getting the word out there to as many young people as possible. The best thing is that YOU can get involved in the project from wherever you are in the world!

The message is simple: Ocean ecosystems are being destroyed before our very eyes… it is in the hands of younger generations to reverse the mistakes of the past to give hope for a better future.

The project sees kids from all over the world making huge sheets with their handprints and a message beside each print to those in positions of power, asking for the protection of our oceans and wildlife- to safeguard the futures of the youth of the world. After collecting as many sheets as possible, I will personally deliver these sheets to the environmental decision-makers of today…
The sheets will be personally presented at international environmental conferences as well as large public events. More details will be announced as the project progresses.

The whole ‘In Our Hands’ journey will also be filmed over the duration and made into a documentary of the same title in order to further encourage, inspire and educate kids all over the world on marine conservation efforts and standing up and having your voice heard as a younger individual…

Champions for Change

Starting as an idea to get the ‘In Our Hands’ project out there to more of Australia’s youth, the Champions for Change initiative began in March 2013, for 6 months, and saw us travel to hundreds of schools and universities all over Australia’s coastline to help further the message of the In Our Hands Project. More on how this tour went still to come!

If you work at a school (or still go to school) this is one of the best and quickest ways to gain many handprints and educate a large amount of kids at once- if your school, university or local event is in Australia, email me at to organise myself to come and speak at your school during the 2013 education tour!

If you belong to a social club or organisation, sporting team, if you have a stall at a market etc- you can EASILY get involved by collecting handprints and sending them to me. EVERY handprint counts!

Any general questions or to find out where to send your sheet- please email me! Comments about the project can also be left below! πŸ™‚
On the path to protect,

  1. Greetings!
I’m a marine biology freshmen in the University of Puerto Rico. I saw the video and am very interested in helping out in the movement… In my university we have the Coastal Marine Biology Student Association, and I think my mates would be thrilled to help introduce the movement in a few schools in the island. Does it count? Even if we are from another country…

Thanks for doing what you do.
    -Yashira A. Cruz

    1. Of course it still counts!! πŸ™‚ Please try and get as many people as you possibly can to put their handprints on a sheet, once you’re finished, send me an email and I will let you know where to send them.. In the meantime, if you have any questions at all please email me at

I cannot thankyou enough for this! I will think of some way to give thanks for all of those people who manage to make sheets for me, at the very least- your names will be in the credits of my documentary! (Assuming that is ok with you of course..)
Make sure you take plenty of photos of everyone making the sheets when you go to schools and send them over to me aswell! (Please obtain permission first..)

Thanks for your support! Every little bit helps! πŸ™‚

      1. Hello Nichole!
I have very very good news. In the past months I’ve been planning to make an activity in order to collect sheets for your project with my college’s Marine Biology Student Association and finally we had been given not one but three mayor opportunities. The San Jorge’s Children Hospital has given us a place in their Children Day Celebration on April the 15th and as the closing activity for their Environmental Education Fair on the 20th . We are also going to have a table in another Environmental Education Fair in the town of Juncos, Puerto Rico on the 25th . We are going to accompany the activity with a short talk about marine ecosystem conservation and awareness, trying to encourage the children to take action. I thought you’d be glad to know. Expect your shipment on sheets more or less by May 2012. Lets hope we can collect many many hand prints and may they be an equivalent amount of children compromised with this initiative by the end. =)
        – Yashira

  2. Great! I’ll email when everything is ready. This movements are worth supporting and everyone loves feeling they can make a difference so I’m sure it will go great. Hope the project ends up being a complete success. =)

  3. Hi Nicole,
I to would like to help you with “In Our Hands” project. I work at an Athletic club taking care of kids, ages 6mo-13 yr olds. And have connections to different grade level teachers. Do you want anything written next to there hand prints? I can start planning this next week. And then start the hand prints the following week. Over winter break I can get EVEN MORE hand prints!! A few kids already know about me supporting the cause against the dolphin slaughter in Taiji. And know of my trip I had there a few weeks ago. I have COMPLETE SUPPORT from them! I will email you when I am ready to begin and when I have finished sheets. About how many hand prints do you put on a sheet or it doesn’t matter? I am so happy I can offer my help!! πŸ™‚

    Robin ~~~ }

    1. Wow, thank you SO much Robin!! πŸ™‚ I really do need all the help I can get, so anything you can do for the project helps a whole lot! I’ve found that about 80-100 handprints and messages will fill up a big sheet nicely..
Any message about protecting our oceans will be taken to the UN meeting, as the meeting is about ocean protection in general- therefore it allows kids to even pick their favourite animal to send a message about, or the whole ocean as a whole! πŸ™‚ Whatever they like..
Thanks again, definitely email when you begin to get handprints πŸ™‚
      Nic xx

      1. You’re Welcome πŸ™‚ Do you want just white sheets? I’m just happy to be able to help. And Thank You for all you do……Tell Rosie I said Hi, we met when I was there a few weeks ago. I wish you guys the best of days! πŸ™‚

  4. I made a contact with a teacher today. I believe she teaches 7th & 8th grade. Just so happens she is going to be teaching about the Ocean very soon. I am going to try and email her your BLOG! She actually wanted you to come to her class. I told her where you were. I am going to email her right now. I’ll let you know how it goes. Let me know if you want her email also. I will send it to you on FB VIA – PM.

    1. Thanks, Robin! That would be awesome! I will really try and get to as many schools as time and location will allow in Australia over the next six months!! Definitely send me her details, (or you could send her my email, as above) and we can get something organised! πŸ™‚

      Thanks for your help!

  7. Hi im a big fan of your work! Im a preschool teacher and have access to hundreds of kids in Los angeles. im sure they would all love to participate I just need to get the materials together. The only problem I have is that all the kids parents and the director at my school LOVE sea world im constantly trying to talk to them about how the dolphins orcas and other animals want to be free with their family in the ocean. I even suggest whale watching trips but it seems to fall on deaf ears. Any suggestions? But on a positive note ill work on getting all those handprints and spreading the word to my fellow teachers in the field and we will see how many we can collect. When is the due date?

  8. Nicole, i doa lotofconservation workwith local Uni and schools here in the UK so I will involve them if thats ok and see if we can get some hand prints on sheets, let me know where to send them.
